Bishop Baxter

Bishop Morris K. Baxter, born on July 4, 1945, in Coatesville, PA, was the youngest of four children raised in a deeply Christian household. From an early age, he embraced his faith and was baptized at his father’s church, Holy Trinity Church of God in Christ (COGIC). After graduating from Scott High School, he continued his education at Lincoln University and later earned a Bachelor of Theology from King of Kings Bible College. In 1966, he married Lilly Jasper, and together they raised four daughters in a loving, faith-centered home.Bishop Baxter’s ministry began with his ordination in 1969, and his passion for sharing the gospel soon led him to establish the Cathedral of Love COGIC in 1978. As his teaching and leadership attracted more people, the growing congregation outgrew their home. In June 1981, the church was blessed to purchase property in Willingboro, New Jersey. Bishop Baxter’s vision and leadership guided the church in becoming the first Black Pentecostal church in the area. During the building phase, the church adopted the motto from one of his powerful sermons, “Stop God if You Can!” In 1989, the congregation triumphantly marched into their new church, miraculously mortgage-free, with Bishop Baxter proclaiming, “Our doors swing on the hinges of love.”Known for his deep compassion and ability to connect with people, Bishop Baxter’s ministry extended beyond the pulpit. He co-founded the Burlington County Black Clergy Association and supported various mission efforts worldwide. His commitment to civil rights was evident through his participation in key historical moments, such as the Selma-to-Montgomery March and the Million Man March, always championing the cause of justice and equality. On September 18, 2023, Bishop Baxter was called home to be with the Lord, leaving behind a powerful legacy of faith, love, and service. He is remembered by his beloved wife Lilly, their daughters, grandchildren, and the many lives he touched through his ministry and community work.
